Back to Back EP, another sample of the South American Hardtechno
Another week, another jaw-dropping hardtechno EP.
This week, we’re taking a look at Back to Back EP, the kick-ass new release by Lab Theory records.
Starring Venezuelan DJs Dr Deneb and Tavuk, it’s a South American-tinged EP that might just test everything you thought you knew about hardtechno…
Dr Deneb is the owner of Lab Theory Records, a record label created in Argentina that is banging the hardtechno drum throughout South America and beyond.
Tavuk, meanwhile, is his very special guest for their label’s latest release. A rising star in his own right who, like Dr Deneb is based in Buenos Aries.
Tavuk just needs a platform to showcase his fiery beats to the rest of the world.
And the new EP from Lab Theory Records could be the stage he’s been waiting for.
Back to Back EP
The title of this EP suggests that Dr Deneb and Tavuk are in this together as brothers in arms.
They’re co-conspirators of soulful South American hardtechno who right now are at the top of their game.
The EP kicks off with Tribal Civilization by Dr Deneb, a rapid slice of hardtechno that bypasses any warmup period and launches straight into the action. It’s an absolutely killer tune packed with catchy melodies, hooks and blast-beats.
Tavuk’s Dark Clouds follows, and its title is instructive.
This is hardtechno very inspired by South American melancholy.
The brooding melody that defines the track and vocals are able to touch the deepest emotions.
The Laughing Cow by Dr Deneb finds him in an experimental mood, and it’s a lot glitchier and less straightforward than Tribal Civilisation. At times, the rhythm is clunky and awkward, before it bursts into life. It’s euphoric.
Another Brick In The Wall, which samples the classic Pink Floyd track, is Tavuk’s final offering.
The seventies prog-rock band has never sounded this menacing.
Like The Laughing Cow, it’s an experimental track that shows us that there is more to hardtechno than many would have thought possible.
Overall, Back to Back EP is one which pushes the limits of what is expected of hardtechno.
The South American scene is well and truly booming, and by adding its own unique, cultural flavours, it’s taken the genre into exciting new places.
